Extinguishers are specifically designed to put out certain types of fires.
The common classes of fire are:

Class A – carbonaceous solids e.g. wood, paper and plastics
Class B – flammable and combustible liquids
Class C – flammable gases
Class (E) – fire involving energised electrical equipment
Class F – fire involving cooking oil and fats.

In the event of a fire:

Remove people
Alert
Confine fire and smoke
Extinguish

Pull the pin
Aim at the base of the fire
Squeeze the discharge level
Sweep from side to side
